Golden Nugget: “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.”

Daily Verse: “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.” —John 16:12

Daily Message: 

William Wilberforce, a great abolitionist and leader, wrote a passionate letter to his fifteen-year-old daughter to share the wisdom he had learned through his many years of fighting for the anti-slavery movement in Britain. In this letter he exhorted his daughter to be, above all else, “self-suspicious.” He summarized all the wisdom he would pass on to her in those words. Be self-suspicious. 

Jesus remarked, “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.” Those words have a weight to them, a challenge even. Jesus taught so many truths about creation, the fall of humanity and sin, the redemption that God promises, God’s kingdom, and the hope to come. But even with all he pronounced, there was still so much more to say. 

The challenge to us within Jesus’ statement is to remember that we do not know everything. We would be wise to be self-suspicious as we study and teach the scriptures. Jesus extends an invitation to go deep into the things of God and to enjoy the wisdom and clarity, as well as the mystery.

• What do you think Jesus specifically had in mind when he said those words? 
• Would you describe yourself as “self-suspicious”?

Read an article or a book by someone with a different viewpoint than you and, instead of focusing on all the things you disagree with, look for the areas of agreement and take note of them.
